The first step to repair shingles is to remove all remnants of the old damaged shingles including pulling or pounding in all the nails. They need to be replaced. Apply some roofing cement to the back side of the shingle. To replace a single shingle first use a chisel and hammer to split it into several narrow pieces then yank them out with pliers.
