Shifting traansmission does not lock doors.

Transmission hard shift door locks dont work when shifting from park to drive. When i bought the car i did not have a remote i did not know if that was the problem. Condition clears up if car is left parked for 6 hours. My 2004 toyota corolla s does not lock or open the central door lock when moving from to park.
